Why Christ reaches for Adam and Eve.

“And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.”

COLOSSIANS 1:18 · KJV

Why does the Orthodox icon of the Resurrection show Christ grasping Adam and Eve by the hands? Called the Anastasis, it depicts His descent into Hades, the realm of the dead. The broken gates beneath His feet proclaim His victory over death; His outstretched hands reveal the mercy of the Savior who comes to raise us.

In From the Depths of Hell, Fr. John Breck reflects on this icon and the unity of Christ’s saving work. The eternal Son truly becomes man, dies, rises, and ascends for our salvation. In Him we receive forgiveness, healing, and the hope of resurrection. The Church calls us to respond to His grace with faith and repentance, entering ever more deeply into communion with God.

What is Orthodox Lubbock?

Orthodox Lubbock is a regional ministry sharing the Orthodox Christian faith and encouraging Orthodox life across West Texas. We offer resources, welcome questions, and help people connect with parish life.

What is Orthodox Christianity?

The Orthodox Church confesses Jesus Christ as the incarnate Son of God, crucified and risen for the life of the world. Her faith is the apostolic faith, lived in worship, the Holy Mysteries, prayer, repentance, and love of God and neighbor. The introduction to the faith offers a place to begin.

Where can I attend services in Lubbock?

Visit the websites of St. Catherine’s and St. Andrew Greek Orthodox Church for current services, visiting information, and parish news. Please confirm service details with the parish before traveling.

Am I welcome if I am not Orthodox?

Yes. You are welcome to attend a service, listen, and ask questions. You do not need to know the prayers or understand every gesture before your first visit. Holy Communion is received by Orthodox Christians who are prepared to receive; the parish priest can explain this and help you find your next step.

How does someone become Orthodox?

Begin by visiting a parish and speaking with the priest. Learning the faith grows together with prayer, repentance, and participation in the Church’s worship. The priest will guide your preparation and reception into the Church according to your circumstances. There is time to learn, and questions are welcome.

How can I support the work in West Texas?

Pray for the clergy, faithful, and those seeking Christ throughout our region. Welcome a visitor, help a neighbor, and offer your time and skills in your parish. To learn how you might help Orthodox Lubbock, begin a conversation with us.
